Virginia Dofflemeyer
ALBEMARLE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
HALL OF FAME
Virginia Richards Dofflemyer
Virginia Dofflemyer joined the Albemarle High School faculty in 1958 as Choral Music Director, became a Guidance Counselor and for many years was Director of the Guidance Department. Principal Benjamin F. Hurt said Mrs. Dofflemyer was his “right hand lady”.
Mrs. Dofflemyer was always interested in helping others. She initiated the American Field Service Foreign Student Program and hosted two exchange students including Albemarle’s first, Silvia Bruno of Argentina. Mrs. Dofflemyer was also very concerned about community wellness programs and for a decade was Chairman of the Governor of Virginia’s commission that monitored human and patient rights issues the Commonwealth’s facilities serving the needs of those with mental illness and other conditions. Mrs. Dofflemyer and her husband Alfred, have been recognized with local, state, and national awards for their passionate advocacy in the field of mental health.
Virginia Dofflemyer was always truly dedicated to the students, faculty and staff of Albemarle – working diligently to help them become their best. Mrs. Dofflemyer worked tirelessly to help students gain admittance to college and to help obtain financial support. At times, she even helped students financially.
As her nominator, Robert L. Kennedy stated, “Had it not been for Mrs. Dofflemyer and her husband Alfred, I would not have been fortunate enough to go to college. They saw to it that finances did not stand in my way. I wanted to let everyone know what a special lady and educator she has been and still is in my life - and in the life of many others”.
