HALL OF FAME

Sherman Thomas Shifflett

Sherman is a 1960 graduate of Albemarle High School and represents one of the many "success stories" where a school like Albemarle can make the difference for an individual who does not have an easy path to higher education and the opportunities it provides. Sherman was one of eleven children in a family with little money for college. With the help and personal attention of Albemarle High School Principal Benjamin Hurt and coaches Ed Null and Julian King, Sherman made the extra effort necessary to remain in high school when many others would not. He worked tirelessly on his courses, after-school jobs and football and track. Sherman attended Ferrum Junior College for two years where he washed dishes every day for tuition and still found the time for football and track.

After taking time off several times from school to raise money, he received his bachelors degree in 1966 from East Tennessee State and a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia in 1972.  Along the way, he also served in the United States Army. Sherman became a teacher, coach and administrator at Louisa High School where he provided an example for thousands of students for thirty-one years. Partly because of his experience at Albemarle, Sherman was always willing to help students, offer encouragement and relate to those who were considering dropping out or struggling.  Sherman continues to participate in numerous  community activities and organizations in the Louisa County community and has served on the Louisa County School Board since 2006. Sherman is always ready to give those who gave him advice and help along the way all of the credit for his success. He is a supporting Member of the AHS Alumni Association.
