Benjamin F. Hurt
ALBEMARLE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
HALL OF FAME
Benjamin F. Hurt
Mr, Benjamin F. Hurt came to the new Albemarle High School as Assistant Principal in 1953 from his job as Principal of Greenwood High School. He served as Principal from 1954 through 1984.
During Mr. Hurt’s thirty years as principal, there were over 10,000 graduates from Albemarle High School. Wherever graduates of AHS gather, Mr. Hurt is remembered for his pleasant smile, his fantastic memory of names, greeting students at the front door as they arrived at school, being in the halls in between periods saying hello to everyone and taking such a personal interest in each and every student.
Mr. Hurt was such a gentle leader that maintained control of students and managed faculty through mutual respect. He knew every student personally, and could always talk about their interests, their family and their plans. Conversations with him were always personal
Mr. Hurt and his wife Maria are regulars at class reunions for his 30 classes. Attending these events from 25 to 55 years after graduation, alumni are amazed that he remembers their name, their family, their siblings’ names and where they live. His personal interest in people never stops.
Mr. Hurt was born in Farmville, Virginia and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College. He received a Masters degree from the University of Virginia. He served his country during World War II in the Army and reached the rank of Master Sergeant. He is active in the Crozet Baptist Church, and has been active in community organizations including the Crozet Lions Club where he attended every regular meeting for 34 consecutive years. Mr. Hurt has been recognized by the community in many ways, and he is a member of the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame.
